Dynamic Simulation of the Small Wheel and JD Disk Installation

Project Responsables:

Year : 2007

The Small Wheel and the JD disk have been fully assembled and integrated as components of the ATLAS Muon System. Their installation was performed by lowering the assemblies through the access shaft to a depth of 100 meters underground, followed by a series of complex vertical and longitudinal positioning maneuvers within the highly congested environment created by the surrounding detector components.

Engineers from the CATIA Competence Center performed a comprehensive dynamic simulation of the installation process using detailed 3D models of both the SW+JD and the complete ATLAS detector. The analysis was carried out using the CATIA Digital Mock-Up (DMU) modules, and the results were documented in a detailed technical report.

The study concluded that the predefined installation trajectory for the End-Cap Two types of potential conflicts were considered: clashes and clearance violations. Dynamic conflict checking was performed separately for each segment of the Small Wheel (SW) and JD disk lifting path. Cases in which the clearance between the moving SW+JD assembly and the surrounding detector components was less than 80 mm were not considered in detail.

The analysis results demonstrate that the SW+JD lowering operation can be successfully carried out along the proposed movement path, provided that the identified clash and clearance conflicts with the Muon brackets, rails, and support structures are resolved during the final positioning phase inside the detector.
