To establish the ATLAS CATIA 3D database, the existing 3D models were migrated from Euclid to CATIA. This migration process had its own specific methodology and technical requirements.

As shown in the diagram above, the migration of 3D models from Euclid to CATIA consisted of six stages.

STAGE A:

At this stage, GCCEC (Georgia) performed conflict checking of the 3D models received from Euclid against the existing ATLAS CATIA 3D database. Based on the results of this verification, a Conflict Checking Report was generated.

STAGE B:

The Conflict Checking Report was sent to ATLAS TCN (CERN) for modification of the 3D model whenever conflicts with existing models in the database were identified. After the required modifications, the updated model was returned to Stage A for a new round of conflict verification.

STAGE C:

Once conflict-free models were received from Stage B, GCCEC (Georgia) divided the models into logical assemblies, as required by the technical specifications. These subdivided models were then uploaded to the migration server.

STAGE D:

Before the uploaded models could be stored in the CERN Drawing Directory (CDD), they had to be registered. This activity was carried out by GCCEC (ATLAS). If a model had not been partitioned correctly during Stage C, the registration process failed, and the model was returned to GCCEC (Georgia) for correction and resubmission.

STAGE E:

After successful registration in the CDD, the CAD TS group (CERN) automatically converted the models into two CATIA formats: .CATPart (with history) and .CGR (without history). In many cases, the .CATPart models contained conversion errors, whereas the .CGR models were generally accurate representations of the corresponding Euclid models.

STAGE F:

At this stage, GCCEC verified the .CATPart (with history) models in the CATIA CAD environment by comparing them with the corresponding .CGR (without history) models. The purpose of this comparison was to identify any geometric or conversion errors introduced during the migration from Euclid. Based on the verification results, a Compare Checking Report was prepared. Models with unacceptable conversion quality were returned to Stage E for reconversion. Once successfully validated, the models were incorporated into the ATLAS CATIA 3D database.

The migration process demonstrated that approximately 40% of the Euclid models encountered conversion failures during their transformation to the CATIA format.

Following the migration, designers at the CATIA Center reproduced the models that had failed during transformation and prepared comprehensive technical reports describing the identified issues and the corrective actions taken.

As a result GCCEC has developed and conveyance to ATLAS the database of CATIA models entitled “CATIA models DB of ATLAS version 1.0 - 2008”. CATIA center spent 31 months and ~13’000 man/hour for the development of product, including activity as conflict checking and elimination of faults from initial models to be transferred together with ATLAS designers; splitting and modification of initial models; development of control drawings; registration of initial models with control drawings on CERN drawing database; compare checking of transferred CATIA models with initial models for geometrical identity; preparation of reports. ATLAS spent 172’000CHF for the employment of GCCEC manpower in Georgia for the development of product.

The CATIA Center delivered 3,705 editable CATIA 3D models together with their corresponding non-editable .CGR representations, associated 2D engineering drawings, and 792 completeness reports in HTML format. The product consists of 2 packages of 8 DVD’s with a total 31Gb data.

Parties acknowledge and agree that ATLAS Agreement No. AA177/04 “Providing Engineering Manpower for ATLAS TCn” signed in Geneva, Switzerland on July 29, 2004 and its related addendums - addendum #3 signed in Geneva, Switzerland on April 30, 2007; addendum #2 signed in Geneva, Switzerland on April 20,2006 have been executed successfully.
