Giorgi Bokhochadze presented the Tracer VRChat project during the ATLAS Week Outreach session at CERN. Tracer VRChat is a full-scale virtual reality environment that provides immersive access to the ATLAS detector at CERN’s Point 1. The project combines social VR features with AI to deliver an interactive and scalable educational experience.
Key Features of Tracer VRChat:
- VRChat Integration: Built using the VRChat platform, the system enables real-time virtual interaction. Users can join events hosted by physicists and engineers, attend live lectures, and explore 3D visualizations of ATLAS experiments.
- Performance Optimization: The project contrasts “unoptimized” (269.3K polys) with “optimized” (64.1K polys) environments. Optimizations include texture baking, baked lighting, and aggressive occlusion culling to ensure performance stability within VRChat’s technical constraints.
- AI-Powered NPCs: Tracer VRChat supports AI-driven non-player characters capable of providing real-time, context-aware dialogue. These NPCs act as multilingual virtual tour guides, enhancing the educational reach and allowing autonomous interaction.
Educational and Outreach Value:
- Provides a global, immersive experience of the ATLAS detector’s geometry and scale.
- Encourages real-time scientific dialogue with global audiences.
- Enhances accessibility to particle physics knowledge through multilingual AI and interactive VR environments.
Development Team:
Led by Alexandre Sharmazanashvili (Project Manager), with contributions from Giorgi Bokhochadze (Unity Developer), Giorgi Mirziashvili and Ela Abramovi (Geometry Design), Vladimir Dolinski (Textures/Rendering), and Aleksandr Alikhanov (3D Scene Design).
